I would use the same approach with children as I would with adults, but using age-appropriate language. But never talk down to children. They must recognize my respect for them. Re: your question , how to keep clients' hopes up? Be sure you are asking the client to do only what he can be successful at. If he still refuses to carry out assignments, review again the necessity for practice. Re: your question as to what the clinician tell the client who blames himself for his stuttering, I'd say tell him no one knows what causes stuttering, so he should not blame himself. But he is responsible for learning how to stutter in an easier, less tense manner. He must be patient with himself because he is trying to change extremely well-learned habits. Lindsey, you have asked questions that require a book to answer adequately! I'm sure my brief answers don't really satisfy you, but there are many good books on stuttering therapy that would give you what you seek. Also, you learn answers simply through experience, I wish you all success in your career!
