Thanks for your question, Renee! There has long been debate over the role of parents in the development of stuttering in the child. It is never wise for parents to criticize their child's speech, or even to try in a kindly way to make the child speak in some different manner. It is important, especially in the early years, to react to what the child says, not how he says it. The child should enjoy talking. If he should begin to show tension, effort or struggle behavior when he speaks, a therapist should be consulted without making the child aware of the parents' concern.
