Thanks for your comments, Nicole. As an SLP, I have to work with what the child does and says. All I can deal with is his stuttering behavior as such, and I have no idea what an "underlying cause" might be, assuming one exists. If the child begins to show evidence of some concomitant problem that is clearly apart from the stuttering, I might recommend counseling for the child and/or parents. But generally, the child's reaction to his stuttering is likely to be the cause of any concomitant issue, and I would deal with that as part of the child's problem.
