Thanks for your comments, Sara. I've generally used used a "stuttering modification" approach in working with children rather than "fluency shaping," but that's just my preference. I really couldn't name any type of therapy that is the best for children, with the most predictable outcome. I would suggest that you get the 2009 catalog of The Stuttering Foundation, 800-992-9392 or www.stutteringhelp.org. They have some excellent and inexpensive books and DVDs on therapy for all ages. Example: "Treating the School-Age Child Who Stutters: a Guide for Clinicians," by Carl Dell, $2.00. But let me also give you my wife's opinions. She was a public school speech therapist for many years, Dorothy J. Williams ("D.J.") She says: "Goals for all ages were the same for me with use of language appropriate for the client's age and mental capacity. Therapy of course depended on the symptoms shown. in children, habit patterns are not as firmly set as they are in adults, often resulting in less resistance and quicker progress."
