Hi Rick - Thanks for the comment. You've raised a good point. It is important for parents and teachers to understand what is going on in therapy... so, yes, we would want to be sure to explain that we are not simply telling the child to "slow down." The main point for the teachers and parents is that we need to teach the child HOW to slow down, not simply tell them to do so. That's the point of the analogies. If they think it's just telling the child to slow down, then we need to give them a bit more detail about the treatment. As for whether children model after their environment...they do, but the literature on this is a little thin. It's not clear in what way they copy in the environment or how changes in the parental speaking patterns affect the child. The assumption is that kids slow down in response to reductions in parents' rate, but there aren't many studies demonstrating this. Finally, re the difference in speaking rate in children who stutter. This has been studied extensively and we haven't seen strong support in the literature for a consistent difference between children who stutter and children who don't stutter. It's hard to compare their rate during moments of stuttering vs. fluency because the stuttering messes up the speaking rate measures. Again, thanks for the comments. Thanks, S
