Hi Malorie - Thanks for the email. Some kids do have difficulty discriminating between different speaking rates (or levels of tension). To try to help with this, I would separate out discrimination rate (or tension) in nonspeech activities versus speech activities. Typically they have an easier time in the nonspeech activities...and you can stay with those 'til the concept is secure in the child's mind. Then, move to having the child discriminate rate in somebody else's speech rather than the child's speech. Then, finally, once he's got the ability to discriminate in others, he's ready to start with his own speech. It may take more time for some kids than others, but if you take it step by step up a hierarchy, you can help kids accomplish things they couldn't do before. Again, thanks for the note! Scott
