Hi Julie, Thank you for reading my paper and participating in this threaded discussion. I’m always heartened when I receive feedback from graduate students as I believe that such exchanges are to our mutual benefit. More than nine years have now passed since I last heard the dissenting voice, so it’s difficult to recall everything that happened. My recollection is that it persisted for just a short period (possibly a few months) before it finally fell silent. I don’t think there was any specific event that caused it to cease its negative chatter. It was more an accumulative effect of the many positive things that I was doing at the time. I had drawn up an extensive and concerted plan of action that involved expanding my comfort zone in a multitude of ways. You may learn more about my exploits by reading some of my other online papers: (1) ‘STUTTERING IS NOT JUST A SPEECH PROBLEM’ http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/Infostuttering/badmington.pdf (2)’STEP OUTSIDE: Why expanding comfort zones can improve our stuttering and lead to more fulfilling lives’ http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad6/papers/badmington6.html I also used the following positive affirmations on a daily basis: “I am a confident speaker in every situation” and “I can deal with whatever challenge life presents”. When we use affirmations in the present tense, it has the effect of convincing us that we already possess such skills/attributes. It is only during recent years that I have come to understand the impact of my belief system. When I realised that I held limiting beliefs that were adversely affecting my life, I decided to change them. Knowing that this lay within my power was immensely empowering. Many other contributors have also expressed the view that the content of my paper is equally applicable to persons who do not stutter. Julie, I wish you every success with your studies. Kindest regards Alan
