Hi Kristen. Facing fears is good for everyone, as fears can limit anyone's ability to lead a satisfactory life. We need to find ways past fears or at least get a healthy relationship to those fears. And I hope that therapists not only give assignments to PWS to stutter in public, but that they do this together, as this fear might be just as high for non stutterers as for PWS. By facing my fears I learned to no longer fear the fears and when that happens, it's easier to work with yourself, asnow the physical work can start. For some the speech training helps to get more fluent, but there is a risk that the fear is still there. If you work on the fear first, it might be easier to take in speech training, as you're no longer afraid to stutter in case you might have a difficult situation. I still stutter, but it went from every word to every 15 minutes. And now it's easier for me to stutter-stop-say it again using a technique. Also advertising helped me a lot, as when I stutter, I don't scare people anymore. :-) They now know it's just a stutter, not a fit. That's why it's important to ask the client what he/she wants and find a way to treat both the mental and the physical part of stuttering.
