Alana By starting meditation practice one has to be very patient and not to expect too soon results. It is actually a life engagement. The beginning can be especially frustrating as a lot of mind rubish appears on the surface. I now think that gentler forms of Zen or Buddhist meditation like mindfulness training with MBSR are good alternatives. I think that looking for enlightenment is not the right approach, mindfulness training and just sitting is enough.
