Meghan, I tell clients and students both that covert sstuttering is probably more of a problem than overt stuttering. Its a little like tinnitus in that others can't tell that its going on so they have a hard time understanding how much of a problem it can be. For a long time I thought my covert stuttering was just me not beiing a very verbal person. Even recognizing that its going on can be a problem and, of course, one must be careful not to use it as an excuse for other problems. I do believe that it is more disabling than overt stuttering just as with any "invisible disability". By its very nature covert stuttering requires that you be even more aware than overt stuttering and the results of any therapy for it are pretty much totally subjective.
