Ms. Butler, I think that it’s wonderful that you have chosen Audacity as a therapy technique for stutterers. I have worked with the program on my own at home, but never thought of it as a therapy tool for stuttering. Not only does it allow students to visually perceive the sound of their speech, but it also helps them to maintain some control over the therapy technique, which, for older children and adolescents, is needed. Outside of the visual aid, Audacity also provides children and teenagers to practice speech in some real-world contexts. They could make up their own radio news broadcast, a drama dialogue, or record a poem or song they have written. It can allow children to practice fluent speech, but also to see it used in a context that they enjoy and that makes sense, preparing them for experiences they might face later. I also like that parents can download the program at no cost. I know that this may not be the solution for everyone, but at a time when children are so proficient with technology, it appears to be a program that will help many stutterers, especially those who are visual learners.
