Hi Anna, I'm so glad you found something helpful in the article and discussion. The world needs thoughtful, caring, ethical people like you. Thankfully, we have you in the field of speech therapy for stuttering! A note about homework: it is never completed quite the way I expect. The 'layperson' comes from a different place than the SLP. Every year, my continuing education and ongoing personal experiences somtimes feels like a widening gap between the client and myself. My understanding of specific therapy/homework activities is embedded within an educational context and it can be difficult to remember that the student and family do not have this background. Try to imagine yourself attending an advanced course in a subject you know nothing about, let's say chemistry. You will hear jargon and concepts specific to chemistry and you will listen to a teacher who is literate in the field, meaning, she will talk quickly relating concepts to one another, referencing historical information with predictions about future experiments....You may complete homework with a superficial understanding of the material and get a passing grade, but, did you leave the classroom really appreciating how the coursework relates to your daily life? We need to respect a client's frame of reference when placing expectations upon him. Maybe the highly structured format that technology sometimes provides will help us out with this challenge to the therapeutic alliance. Judy :)
