Stephanie: The speech therapy that I received at NMSU was light-years apart from my earlier therapy. Over the course of 30 years or so, speech therapy has become much more advanced as researchers and SLP’s discovered that there is more to stuttering than just mechanical vocalizations of sounds. The “new” approach and my age at the time all contributed to what I consider successful therapy. I was in my 40’s when I went back to therapy and had reached the point where I didn’t really care much anymore what people thought of my stuttering. I had dealt with all kinds of comments over the years, both good and bad, and had developed somewhat of a thick skin. I will admit that when I first went back to therapy, I didn’t have much faith in it at all. But I was surprised at how much it helped. My age probably had quite a bit to do with it, and it was just time for me to try it again. I just happened to luck out and get 4 student SLP’s who were very enthusiastic and were willing to show me how to find my own way. I am still grateful to all 4 of them as they really did help change my life.
