Danielle: My early speech therapy sessions were strained to say the least. Part of that was due to the time (middle 1960’s and early 1970’s) and the fact that was how things were done back then. When I went back to therapy in 2000, the entire environment was completely different. It was still held in a “clinical” type setting, but the feeling in the air was a lot friendlier. When my student clinicians began dragging me kicking and screaming the whole way out of the clinic to go to the Student Union Building and other various places on campus, my first thoughts was I was going to DIE!!! They of course didn’t seem to notice my apprehension or if they did they just ignored it (typical girl thing). But I survived it and in a small way began to thrive in it. My speech became smoother with fewer blocks and repetitions, so they pushed me farther than I wanted to go. I told all four that they were all “hateful and proud of it” numerous times and they seem to thoroughly enjoy that. But they really helped me expand my horizons. I just hope that I was able to help them somewhat in their studies as much as they helped me.
