Joanna: I had wondered why I could sit on my motorcycle and talk to anyone and then later on once I became an Emergency Medical Technician, why I could talk to patients but not my partner or police, fire, etc. When I first went to college in 1975, I took an “Abnormal Psychology” class because I thought I would fit right in with the case studies in the book. I talked to my professor about my not stuttering while on my motorcycle (I was still racing then) and would start stuttering the minute I got off. She was a licensed Psychiatrist who had a practice in town and taught part-time. She told me that when I was on my motorcycle, I was “in control” and felt like I was on “top of the world”. But once I got off the motorcycle, I was just like everyone else. She had a rather long name for it which I can’t remember as it was over 30 years ago now. After I became an EMT, I discovered the same issue when I was talking to patients. I just assumed that it was the same type of “control” feeling as when I was on my motorcycle. One thing I’ve learned over the years is the human brain is very unique system. Just as no one really knows what causes stuttering, we don’t really know how the brain works either. Medical science has come up with bunches of theories and suppositions, which explain a lot but not everything. Even now when I’m in a situation where I’m in total control, I stutter considerably less than normal if at all. I guess you could say that my biggest problem now is that since I’ve been married for almost 24 years, I’m very seldom in total control of anything!!! But even so, I wouldn’t give up my current life even if it meant I would no longer stutter. I’ve got children, grandchildren, cats and dogs that need to be harassed occasionally so they don’t get the mistaken impression that I actually like them being around.
