Ashley: Everything that happens to a person tends to shape their life. I’m sure my stuttering helped shape my life as I chose jobs, friends, etc. It was not the major factor or at least I don’t think it was. My stuttering just added to my natural tendencies to avoid people in general. If I would have had the type of therapy back when I was child that I had at NMSU, I’m sure my life would have turned out somewhat differently, how much is anybody’s guess. The problem with wondering how my life would have been different is just that. You can not change what happened in your past, you can look back in time to see mistakes that were made so you can avoid those in the future, but the past is past. I usually try to not dwell on “what was” and try to focus on “what can be”. To me it is important for the SLP to view their client as a person with a problem, and not a problem with a person attached to it. You can teach a person various techniques to improve their fluency, but you can’t teach fluency issues how to deal with the person behind it.
