Harriet: Your 28 year old male sounds to me that he is not ready for speech therapy. For speech therapy to work the client needs to be in a state of mind that will allow assistance. When I first went back to therapy at NMSU I didn’t think it would work on me as nothing else had over the years, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. Your client probably laughs about his stuttering because he is ashamed of his stuttering and figures that laughing about it will ease the emotional turmoil caused by the stuttering. He won’t change his attitude until he is ready to accept that his stuttering is just a part of him, and it does not define who he is. You do have your work cut out for you though as it won’t be easy to reach him. Good luck.
