Kristen: I am a firm believer in student clinicians. The ones I had and the ones I’ve heard from during this online conference all have an innate desire to help their fellow humans. If you’ve read some of my responses then you know that don’t really consider any of my earlier speech therapy to be all that bad. According to today’s standards, they lacked quite a bit, but at the time and in the geographical region, they were I’m sure top of the line or as close as they could make it. I’ve always felt that a person needs to use the past, their own and others, to determine what worked, what didn’t and what might be tweaked a bit in order to work. You have the right idea, at least in my eyes, in that focusing on the future to make things better is a superb goal for anyone to have. I’m fairly sure that you and all the rest of the students involved in this online conference have read many of the other papers. No two people will have the same experiences nor will they stutter the same way. If you can take a little bit of information from each of the papers you’ve read, combine that with the skills and knowledge you are acquiring in school, then add a touch of “yourself” and you will have the recipe for an excellent SLP who will really help their clients change their lives. That is one hell of a legacy to leave to your descendants; no one can ask any more of you.
