Rachel: Being nervous is completely normal and expected, your future clients will also be as nervous as a “long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs”. Books are a great tool for learning new skills, but like you said they can’t equal hearing someone’s life story. Everyone’s life experiences will be different, but you can learn from all of them. Every time you get a new client, you need to spend a little time up front talking to them about their previous therapy experiences, if they had any. Doing so will give you some insight as to how they view their speech and how willing they will be to work hard on improving it. Nothing in life is easy, but having a clinician (student or not) show you different methods of improving your speech really is a life changing experience. I am very glad I got to work with four students during my latest therapy, they taught me quite a bit, and I hope they learned just a little bit from me (like maybe which clients to run screaming from……).
