Hi Rachel, This activity is merely an example of a hierarchy that can be used if a child who stutters is: 1. working on reading to read with less stuttering 2. working on reading to asssit with learning to use Easier Relaxed Approach in phrases of speech 3. working on reading to learn more about how to "pause" (keeping continuous phonation going until the next pause) I don't know what the literature says about helping children with "reading problems" with this type of approach, but I can tell you that many teachers have said to me "Why don't we teach all of the children to read this way?" If I want to teach a child how to read more successfully and they do have a reading problem and stutter, I would at first utilize material that was below the level of reading they were working on.
