Throughout my education to become an SLP, I have had many questions about how to treat fluency in general, but haven’t really taken into consideration the stresses that are placed upon children in the classroom to read aloud. This assignment puts a lot of stress on children in general, but I would imagine that this struggle is even more enhanced for children who stutter. We often discuss the Demands and Capacities model developed by C. Woodruff Starkweather… In my opinion - high expectations are placed on children when reading aloud in a classroom; such as correctly pronouncing every word, reading very “gracefully”, reading for an audience in general, etc. Do you feel as though this is one of the larger obstacles in reading aloud? How do you feel the Demands and Capacities model may affect someone who stutters during their attempt to read aloud?
