Christina, I have not ever found a child who refuses to participate, once the goals and structure of the activity are explained. It's all in the "packaging." If the SLP presents the idea in a positive, enthusiastic manner, typically the students respond well. Remember, each child may choose how to participate. If he does not feel comfortable sharing feelings with classmates, he may choose to contribute in other ways, such as writing an informative article about stuttering or creating a comic strip. Regarding your question about special needs students, the newspaper concept may be adapted for use with varying populations.
