Corey examines evidence which suggests that males are more susceptible to DAF effects and at greater risk for developmental stuttering. This study exemplifies our progress in scientific methodology as opposed to the more simplified and relatively unsubstantiated hypothesis of earlier years which held that stuttering was more common in males because of the more punitive way we react to boys' normal disfluencies and their more assertive behavior (as opposed to the gentler and more permissive manner with which we react to girls). See Hildred Schuell's study (ca. 1950) "Differences Which Matter: A Study of Boys and Girls," directed by Wendell Johnson.
