Hi Duncan and thanks for your question. My early thoughts were tightly focused on auditory attention. More recently have recently become interested in attention to other modalities as well. Auditory attention is still my primary focus, but I am considering the possibility that attention to other speech features, such as the proprioceptive feedback you mention may be important. Although reduced auditory cortex activity during speech in people who stutter would seem to suggest reduced attention to auditory feedback during speech, it could also be associated with other sensory systems. Because attention both increases salience of a target stimulus and decreases salience of a competing stimulus, the hypoactivity of auditory cortex could be caused by _hyper_activity in a competing sensory system, such as proprioception. I have more to say about this than I can include here, but please get in touch (dave@tulane.edu) if you would like to discuss further. Really interesting question--thanks again.
