When I was younger, I was a bit confused at what the objectives of the sessions were. I didn’t really think I needed to be there, so there was a natural discrepancy in expectations among my parents, the therapist, and me. The focus of each session was speaking up in class regardless of my stutter, but that was never a problem. I would have to read very simple books for an extended period of time—the therapists would take notes and yet share very little with me. It seemed they were the one’s learning, and I just kept stuttering. After a year or so I stopped going all together and decided to deal with it myself. The result was ironically shyness in class: my childish audacity was beginning to wear off. It took me wanting help much later in high school to make the therapy worthwhile. Being treated as a client and not a patient, actually learning techniques to do while caught in a stutter, and having the ability to work on things I thought I needed help with, gave me confidence to speak.
