Speaking seems like such a simple thing. So many people can, or so it seems, talk completely fluently. It is incredibly frustrating to be able to recite a word or phrase in your mind, and yet not be able to say it. For this reason most people who do stutter simply believe a cure is coming, or that you will wake up one day and be completely fluent. The reality is that once you reach your late teens, you will most likely stutter to some degree for the rest of your life. Accepting this fact is tough, and it wasn’t really until I read this speech aloud to my peers that it hit me: I could work to mitigate my stammers, but they will in fact occur throughout the rest of my life. Changing one's expectations of fluent speech is the next step, and finally, becoming comfortable with the occasional stutter has been the most rewarding part for me personally.
