I find myself being the most comfortable in social situations, so I normally do not feel the need to self advertise. These interactions are where I find the techniques I have learned most useful, and so I can normally meet or talk to others fairly fluently. If I am in an interview, or another potentially tense situation, and stuttering becomes an issue, I will certainly self-advertise and it definitely relieves the tension. I currently enjoy the challenge of pursuing almost-fluent speech without the need to self-advertise. I do think it is a good way to begin to go out and challenge yourself, but presently, I try to put myself in those situations without calling attention to my stutter.
