It wasn’t really until I wrote this speech and finally gathered my thoughts that I realized I would stutter for the rest of my life. The reality is that there is no cure, and so you must change your expectation of fluency. I expect to stutter, and so when it happens, it’s no big deal. Pursuing perfectly fluent speech is not a realistic goal, and accepting this does not mean accepting defeat. Pursuing fluency to the best of your ability will probably still include imperfections, and being comfortable with these moments is the key to acceptance. This is certainly a gradual process, and there was no real breakthrough moment when I became comfortable with my stutter.
