I would like to thank you for sharing your experience on how stuttering has affected your life. I enjoyed reading it because it is reminiscent of the speech and theater competitions I used to compete in when I was in middle school. I was the only African American child representing my suburban school in the category of speech. While most children were focused on the content of their speech I had to focus on remembering to use Standard English. And that was for a few reasons. The first reason was that I noticed that everyone in my academic setting was speaking what is considered to be the standard dialect. The second reason was because I didn’t want to be embarrassed. And lastly, I wanted to present my speech in a way that made me appear to be as intelligent as the other children. But now that I’m older I no longer view my dialect as something that I need to be ashamed or embarrassed of. The dialect I speak is not indicative of my academic performance or my intelligence. I accept me for me. Thanks again for sharing your story.
