This is a difficult question to answer in a simple way...avoidance is what I call a coping behavior. I have found that most children/teens/adults who stutter use avoidance coping behaviors to manage difficult speaking situations...i.e. changing words, using fillers, etc. I work on avoidance in much the same way that I discuss other important issues....we brainstorm what avoidance means/what is avoidance/what behaviors might be called avoidance, etc. We also talk about the overall consequences of avoiding talking might be..I find that working with avoidance is an ongoing issue. While many students understand the consequences of avoiding, they still might want to avoid in certain speaking situaitons. I hope this addresses your question.
