Great question...I am dealing with emotions/attitudes that accompany stuttering. As a fluency specicialist/slp, this is am important part of the treatment process. If I encounter a situation where I feel that a child/teen needs counselling, then I refer the family/teen for help. It is usually for a student who demonstrates behaviors/emotions or family issues that are beyond our scope of practice. The important factor in treatment of stuttering is to recognize that slps can provide methods/ideas for helping the pws deal with these issues. This is different than dealing with the types of emotions that require a psychologist; but as an slp, I am aware with any of my clients that additional support may be needed. I have worked with several adults who have been in additional therapy while working on their stuttering.
