I will try to address all of your quesions. First of all, I individualize all treatment with clients as no two individuals (child/teen/adult) has the same needs (including attitudinal or techniques). I often compare techniques to going to the grocery store...everything looks good, but I don't buy everything as their is no way I can use (eat) it all. But I am interested in what is available! So I introduce the techniques and then the students and I explore which ones might work best...they make the choice. This is a form of empowerment for the student...it is also important to help the student understand why carryover is hard. This is where parent education comes in...parents have a big impact on treatment. Most of my parents observe treatment..so they have a better sense of how and why I talk about these issues. I really work hard to help them understand that carryover of techniques is difficult and requires alot of monitoring...this takes time.
