Diane, I hope this message finds you well. Thank you so much for your article. I believe that attitudes and feelings are an integral part of stuttering therapy. I once heard the saying “ It’s hard to build a roof, without the foundation.” I believe attitude and feelings is the “basement” to which therapy can focus and build upon. I really enjoyed your activities and would like to incorporate them into my graduate practicum. I would like to ask your opinion on counseling strategies. I believe that attitudes and feelings are closely related with counseling. As we all know speech language pathologist “wear many hats,” and implementing counseling strategies is second nature in the field. How do you feel about SLP’s incorporating counseling into their sessions? Can you provide any strategies that highlight counseling techniques that you use? When I thought of counseling techniques active listening and summarizing came to mind. This allows clients to take ownership of their feelings, express their feelings, and the clinician responds by retelling (e.g. so what I hear you saying is____ “) however, do you think repeating or summarizing a disfluent message is beneficial or insulting? Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing from you!
