Hi Carly, It took me forever to get to where I am today. It also took two individuals who virtually forced me at gunpoint to join two organizations that I did NOT want to join, the National Stuttering Association and Toastmasters. I hollered and screamed and sweated bullets before I began to realize that I was running away from MYSELF before I began to realize what was taking place in my own life. The defining moment (if I had to pick one), was when I won first place at a very important speaking contest in Toastmasters. None of the judges knew me, yet they awarded me first place in that contest - despite the fact that I stuttered. Realizing the single fact was the key to bringing down my house of cards that I had built up over the years that said (falsely) that people didn't like to listen to people who stutter. You can read more of that story on my home page at http://www.russhicks.com/ and clicking on "Toastmasters" and reading the article published in the Dallas Morning News. ... Carly, are you a student in Judy Kuster's class? If so, I hope to be able to meet with your class on October 26th. Judy doesn't know this yet, so I've got to email her in the next few days. .... Thanks for reading my paper and I hope to see you soon!
