Wow, Russ! Thank you so much for your very generous response! I did go to your website and read the articles you recommended--you are such a vivid writer, I can only imagine how fun it must be to see you speak. I was really impressed by how you were able to see and cherish the positive side of your experience at Shady Trails, even if the speech therapy was, as you said, very primitive. And I was also very impressed that you were able to apply some of what you learned at Shady Trails decades later, when it really "clicked" for you. That's good to know; hopefully as a profession we've made a lot of progress since your days at Shady Trails, but it is encouraging that even if results don't show up immediately in therapy, something might make it all come together for the client later on. I also read your 2005 article on the "Iceberg Matrix of Stuttering" because I had never heard of that analogy, and I am so glad I did because it makes SO much sense and gives me such a clear idea of what my priorities should be when I work with people who stutter. By the way, I just got a confirmation email from my clinic director today that my new client will indeed be a stuttering client, so I will probably be referring back to that article a lot in the next couple weeks. It's funny that you mention going to an NSA meeting--I've actually been seeing fliers for an NSA workshop all around the university clinic and I've been on the fence about going, but I guess you've just resolved that dilemma for me! It's very generous of you to offer to continue this conversation over email and I think I will be taking you up on that offer, especially since I will need all the advice I can get in the next couple of weeks. I think it's really wonderful that you are so involved in the education of SLP students like myself--we don't really know what helps until we hear from the people we're supposed to be helping, and your input is so valuable to us.
