I started out pretty slowly. I started reading poems at an open mic poem night at a local coffee shop. I read a couple poems I made, and a couple I found in books. Reading poetry is about as low-pressure public speaking as is possible. I joined a book club, I went to a few Toastmasters meetings. I also signed up for a public speaking class at the local community college. The biggest thing I learned from all of that is something I call, "think outline," which you kind of have to do with a 5-minute speech, and I think that "normal" speakers do with almost everything they say. I realized that as part of my cluttering, I never came up with a mini outline for anything I would ever say, I'd just start talking. Here's a cluttering therapy idea I have, based on what I've learned about cluttering from public speaking: A) The therapist asks the clutterer to talk about something for 5 minutes, B) The therapist organizes the clutterer's thoughts, and writes out an outline, C) The therapist says back the clutterers story, using the outline (Note that this should be much more organized and understandable than what the clutterer said), D) The clutterer now repeats the story, using the outline modeled by the therapist. Thanks for the book suggestions. I like reading books on public speaking.
