Good question, Janet, because you point to a real challenge - motivating the person who clutters to even participate in therapy at all. I think that tape play-back of themselves and others who clutter might help. "Can you easily understand this person?" I might say to a person who clutters about a clutterer from the St. Louis and Meyers SFA DVD. There a delightful young woman on that DVD who talks a mile a minute and really doesn't think that she herself "sounds too fast." But I think even another clutterer can recognize it. Another idea is to have them tally how many times across a day do you get the "huh?" and "run that by me again" types of comments from listeners. We had Bill tally that and he thought three times in one important meeting was too much for him. Simply by tallying it on the corner of your meeting notes etc could help the mature client who clutters to remember to slow down. In that way the incomprehension indications act as red flags to be slower and more precise in articulating one's utterances. Again, I like to use Mad Gab or Slurvian messages to prove a point about easily "thought you saids" and confusion can set in for even the best-intentioned listener.
