This paper is interesting for several reasons but I think fails to take one issue in to account. While it rightly attributes much of the harm done to stutterers to the medical model I believe that it fails to address an important point. Stuttering, like deafness and similar disorders, is a hiden problem. When someone sees you on the street they won't know that you are a stutterer until you speak. This is unlike disorders which cause you to be in a wheelchair, carry a white cane, use a hook in place of a hand, have severe deforming problems, etc. This hiden aspect of stuttering creates a problem which the public will tend to respond badly to in many cases simply because of the secret aspects of hiden problems. Knowing about them puts me a bit in mind of the famous movie Rear Window.
