Dear Mr. Loriente, thank you for the wonderful, insightful contribution. You are so right: remove the stigma, stop labelling every difference in human bwehaviour as pathological! Your quoting of what was considered pathological in the 19th century is shocking but true. I like to add that women who wanted to leave their husbands were also locked up in asylums for the mentally ill in the 19th century. But back to the issue: I have many friends in different countries who stutter. I believe it is much more important what you say than how you say it. Mankind has to become more truly accepting of differences and focus less on form but on content. So you stutter, so you have a lisp, you have an accent - what do you think, what do you believe is relevant. Since I am a new speech therapist who is interested in working with people who stutter, I will cherish your approach and with your permission adopt the term "transfluency". I am learning about treatment approaches at the moment. I think in order to have a positive effect on a client one needs to encourage the person who stutters to come out of the closet, emphasize content over form and educate those around him to get rid of their prejudice.
