I have taught 3rd graders (about age 8) how to do use a combination lock for the purposes of the demonstration. They take great pride in learning the lock mechanism. Then the metaphor can be delivered with art. One of my mentors used the expression 'the smoke from the ears' response. (This is not to be confused with anger.) It is rapid integration of a learning principle. The lock provides that magic moment.
