The use of analogies and metaphors has long been a way of teaching that has been popular and helpful in all cultures. You just need to make sure that there is a realistic and logical connection between the analogy or metaphor and the thing analogized or metaphorized. In the present instance, we know that stuttering is a multi-factored condition and operating a combination lock requires more than one operation, so there is a logical connection between the nature of stuttering and the way of operating a combination lock -- meaning that it's a valid analogy/metaphor. On the other hand, there's NO connection between baking a cake and flying an airplane....at least I don't think so!!!
