I am a graduate student at New York University working towards a Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology. Currently, I am taking a Fluency Disorders class. I truly enjoyed reading your article on Simplifying Stuttering Therapy in a School Setting. I found it very informative to see how a speech therapist can help a child who stutters even though there are many constraints in this particular setting. While reading your procedures, I understood the importance of them as you have outline in your article. My question relates to “Talk Time”. Why is it that the parents should spend only five minutes in only the child’s bedroom during “Talk Time”? Is it because parents are too busy to take a longer sample or because you feel this is the maximum amount of time needed for the parents to report what they see, feel and observe for decisions to be made about enrollment into therapy?
