Lindsay, you students (see questions prior to yours) are way too insightful! Again, great question! Let me be honest. I do a family program. This does not mean I do "part of a family" program. If the parents do not want to work with me as a group, then I do not recommend they work with me. I refer them to another clinician or recommend we wait until the family is ready to work together. I know this sounds cruel perhaps but I want the child to have the best chance of getting over the problem and I believe a family approach gives the child that chance. In a school setting, however, I cannot just not see the child. I will work with the teachers and others in the communciation environment. I try to work with the difficult parents at the time of the ARD but there are some that are not going to be responsive. It does not hurt to delay treatment until the time is right. I always leave it open for the parents to contact me at any time. Some do, some don't. There is no magic answer here. You have to do the best you can with what you have. I hope this answers your question. If not, let me know and I'll expand if you give me a hint as to what you want to know or where I came up short with this response. Good luck with your work and future career.
