Rachel, I do not enroll a family for therapy until after the three week assignment and after I obtain a case history. If there were problems with the three week assignment, we discuss why those problems existed. If the parents could not or would not complete the first task that was assigned, then I question whether I should proceed with a program that relies on their cooperation. If the parents are not suited for this type of work, I can refer them to someone else or see if there are others in the child's communication environment that might be of assistance. A teacher or even a good friend of the child (perhaps a sibling) can be used if needed. Grandparents are also useful in many cases. I don't want to abandon the child just because the parents have issues. On the other hand, there have been times when we agreed to wait until the time was better to begin a program. Every case is different. You asked a good question! Thanks again.
