LaToya, you are wise beyond your training! Let me address the diagnostic evaluation issue first. The initial assessment, which includes the three week assignment, the direct assessment of the child, and the case history/interview with the parents, forms the foundation on which everything else is based. You will become a better clinician when you conduct a proper assessment. I tend to assess most in areas that I know will be covered in treatment. I guess we all tend to do that. Regarding your statement about "...working with the child to increase fluency," let me ask you the following question: Have you thought about working with the child to increase speech control? Yes, we all want the person who stutters to be more fluent. But, do you think fluency can be a result of learning to control the moment of stuttering? Think about it and let me know what you decide. This is a very important question, by the way! Thanks for your comments and interest. My guess is you are going to be a great speech-language pathologist.
