Carissa, great question. I really like to see the families who have young disfluent children. As a profession we need to be pro-active in this arena. The answer to your question is I would definitely see the family but I would work only with the parents. The speech patterns may be developmental and if so the parents need to know how to respond when their child is talking. I especially enjoy working with the population you describe. That is where so much of our work needs to be done. As I say to the parents I see, "I use your child to get to you!" They seem to like that since they do not know what to do.
