Thank you for this article because I think it is a concern on the list of most school SLPs. In my graduate clinical experience at an area school one of the first clients I worked with was a fourth grader who stuttered. He was scheduled in a therapy group with two classmates who had problems with language comprehension. I wish at that time that I had thought more outside of the box with trying to get him to interact with his parents. What I did take from this experience is that even though it is a less than ideal way to work with a student who stutters this student was very comfortable around his two friends. They had gone to school, and therapy together for a while. In an earlier post I know you suggested using a sibling at home. Do you think recruiting friends or classmates at school could still be effective or helpful? Do you think this would help promote understanding in the classroom? (I was only in this school for 5 short weeks). This definitely changed the way I will think about fluency therapy in schools in the future. Though I was lucky to have that boy and his two friends to help direct me the first time.
