Daisy, thank you for your questions. I try to deal with the issues that are presented as problems by the child and/or parents and stay away from psychological issues that I think may be relevant. Of course, some couseling is needed with the issues that are raised. Eye contact is an excellent desensitization procedure. When a person is keeping eye contact during stuttering it is saying to the listener that I may be having difficulty talking but I want you to stay with me. I have found that a person cannot get control of the moment of stuttering until eye contact can be maintained during stuttering. The eye contact is the first step in speech control as I see it.
