Megan, thanks for your question. Let me clarify your question. "Methods of therapy" do not reduce stuttering. People who experience the therapy choose to use or not to use what they learned. Nothing we do in speech-language pathology will change the way a person talks independent of the person using what they know. Also, I do not strive for fluency. I teach the person to control the moment of stuttering. More fluency (less stuttering) may result but it may not as well. So, to answer your question, it is possible for a child to gain control of their talking with minimal environmental support but it is difficult at best. It it easier, more efficient, and more effective if the parents, school personnel, and child are all on the same page and cooperating.
