When you've been trying to hide (or deny) your stuttering since early childhood, going to a stuttering support group is counter-intuitive. Many people are initially reluctant to attend, and that first meeting is a big step. During my years as a NSA chapter leader, clinicians often referred clients to my support group but only one in 10 actually showed up. I recommend that clinicians accompany clients to their first support meeting. By the way, some SLP professors require their fluency students to attend at least one support group meeting as part of their instruction. I generally tell people that when they are ready to do something about their stuttering, attending a support group is one of the actions they should take.
